I'd say practice letters, limb movements, add some gentle coloring, and backgrounds. Bo over the story you want to tell with a friend first. If they don't seem enthused, workshop your story-line some more.
'For now', you should keep skipping out on highlights, shadows, anatomy, etc.
Other than that, I'd highly recommend you look up some tutorials. NG has a ton of those. There is 'bound' to be one that will help you a bunch!
